The Official Eurail Website, tells you all you need to
know about train travel in Europe on one comprehensive site.

RailEurope, provides information about rail travel
in Europe, as well as online booking.

Deutsche Bahn, covers the whole of Europe
including the UK.

Railpass.com, offers train information, passes and
tickets for travel in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America.

Seat61.com, a website by a British railway enthusiast,
provides a lot of useful information about railway travel in many
countries.

Traveling by train within in Italy can be really inexpensive, but you must follow these instructions:

GB flag - click on ticket - fill in journey - click on View All Solutions at bottom of page.

For regional (regionale) trains you can buy your ticket at train station and you do not need a reservation, the price is the same and on line booking for some trains is not possible! 

For the fast trains  - Freccia rossa/argenta/bianca you need to book on line and they are costly!
