(recinti, pollai, e via dicendo).

In one of the most picturesque mountainous areas of Sicily, the Madonie Mountains, 700m above sea level is Santa Marina a district at the mouth of the Salso river.
Surrounded by the remote, endless countryside, the farm that bears that name is a perfect refuge for body and soul,. Far from noise and chaos, an ideal place where work and reflection find their balance.
In 2019, Lucia and the rest of the family decided to return to live in that area, it had been in semi-disuse for some time, and begin a fresh chapter in its long-standing history intimately linked to farming and country life.
Olive-growing in its many facets is currently the main activity on the farm, from olive harvesting to tree care.
Nonetheless, the constant planning and realisation of agricultural tasks typical of country life can in our case be attributed to Permaculture practices.
However, with a view to giving a new lease of life to a neglected place, in addition to the daily tasks that depend on the natural succession of the seasons, there are more onerous ones that involve restoring, or refurbishing from scratch, strategic areas for the farm's activities.
Our schedule is therefore generally as follows: in late summer (September and October) we focus on the harvesting of nuts, almonds and walnuts, and everything related to the drying and processing of fresh fruit; in autumn (October and November) we are busy with the olive harvest, and these are followed by the pruning and treatment periods.
More recent is the production of olive leaves for food consumption, which involves hand sorting and cutting them each year from among the cultivars in the olive grove.
Among the tasks that do not have any breaks is the care of the apiary, the actual 'beekeeping', which we steadily try to bring up to a higher level each year.
For the rest of the year, time is taken up by routine farm work and the upkeep of the property: tending the orchard, maintenance of the forest and the old watering trough, restoration of the wells and drainage channels, restoration of the paved roads and paths, maintenance of the premises, gardening.
With a view to creating an autonomous and sustainable farm step by step, we have a number of high priority ideas in the pipeline:
- The creation and care of a synergistic vegetable garden
- The construction of a complete composting system
- The setting up of the necessary facilities for housing animals
(pens, chicken coops, and so on).
In the planning and carrying out of all the points necessary for us, we hope to find people willing to help us, not only on a practical level, but also and most importantly in terms of experience and knowledge.
You will be welcomed into an archaic and unusually magical place by a large and articulate family, where the oldest boasts the venerable age of 95 and the youngest 35,
equally peculiar dogs and cats, where no one is left last but everyone has a place and a role, with a view towards hospitality and sharing.
"The land belongs to those who work it", and whoever passes through these lands remains
a part of the stories of this place.
