---o----o-----0-----o----o--- MAMATERRA Casa SanGiacomo is a family-run farm of 18 hectares in organic farming since 2004 in the territory of Sambuca di Sicilia. A place surrounded by hills, wheat and forage fields that allows you to immerse yourself in the quiet of the Sicilian countryside. In 2010 it was certified by the Region of Sicily as an educational farm and agritourism, and in 2012 we began research and experimentation on ancient Sicilian grains, which today is narrated by the production of flours and dry pasta. MAMATERRA Casa San Giacomo is a place and a home where we experiment with actions and small projects involving agriculture, experiences and hospitality. Along with us live a young mixed orchard, olive trees and a dozen or so free-range ponies, donkeys and horses. The farm is located about 6 km from the town of Sambuca di Sicilia. The farm activities we plan to share are related to the daily and seasonal rhythms of the farm: - Taking care of the animals - Pruning, grafting and caring for ancient Sicilian fruit trees - Preparing a small space/garden to start vegetable seedbeds - Routine and extraordinary maintenance of the farm's outdoor and indoor spaces - Making mobile fences for grazing animals - Picking olives and pruning olive trees - Putting hay in storage areas - Removing stones from the grounds - Preparing firewood -Putting straw into storerooms. -Collaboration in the preparation of meals Activities to be shared, if there are reservations, would include hospitality for groups and families and teaching and educational services for schools. Our idea of exchange includes both help in the day-to-day management of the seasonal activities necessary for the farm (as described above) to give people the opportunity to get to know and gain experience, and moments of exchange on ideas and small projects to be implemented to improve the farm in an eco-sustainable direction. Keeping the living spaces tidy and clean. The farmhouse is located on top of a hill 6 km from Sambuca di Sicilia and 8 km from small villages such as Giuliana where the castle of Federico II and the Sant'Anna Park stand out, a natural and wooded oasis unique in the area. Furthermore, with movements of about 20 km it is possible to reach: Burgio, Caltabellotta, Montevago and Santa Margherita among ceramics, ricotta, hot springs and ocelots; lengthening the route by a few km you arrive at the beaches of Porto Palo di Menfi and walking slowly on the sea, you can admire the Temple of Giunone di Selinunte.

I spent a beautiful and relaxing week and a half at MAMAterra. The hosts were very kind and hardworking people, who created a calm environment while I stayed at the farm with them. I was the only woofer staying for most of my stay, which was very relaxing, but I do think my time would have been a bit more engaging had there been other wwoofers there! The days were very well balanced, mornings and breakfast were done individually and we had some down time if there was nothing to be done in the morning. Then lunch was always prepared together, followed by a long siesta, and usually outdoor work until dinner which we also cooked together. During my stay we worked on planting tomato crops and transferring the ponies, (i cavallini!) to a new pasture, I learned how to make Marcella’s wonderful bread, and helped her design a marketing strategy for their farm. Overall my time here was very relaxing and I learned many new skills, practiced some old, and got a good taste of what running this type of agricoltura looks like! I will say that some days there was not a lot of work to do or they did not have many things going on during this time at the farm, I did have to make myself busy which I enjoyed, but without a car there is not an easy way to get into the village nearby and I don’t believe they had bikes, which would have been nice.

I had a wonderful week with Marcella and Mauro. They welcomed me and the other WWOOFers into their home and farm, sharing their delicious food, stories, and many laughs. We spent time taking care of the horses, donkeys, and ponies; picking oranges and gathering wild herbs; and preparing lots of food. Mamaterra is truly a special place, and I'm very grateful for the time I spent there.

I stayed with Mauro and Marcella for 6 days and it was very nice. The farm and the environment was lovely. I learned a lot from Mauro and Marcella. They told me many things about nature and Sicilian culture. Another thing I really loved was all the food they gave me and the experiences I gained here!

I can only recommend everyone to come to this special place and meet everyone and all the animals. Marcella and Mauro are really nice and kind souls, we had a lot of interesting conversations and shared a lot of laughs. We learnt a lot about pausa (!), work was not much and for the period I stayed, mostly helping in the kitchen and with the first tourism project trials ((: We literally had the best food (thank you Luca!) and I’ll teach my friends at home how to make homemade couscous. I had a really beautiful experience, the area is quiet but incredible and I was very lucky to spend my time with other amazing wwoofers and Marcellas nephew! Grazie e a presto!
