I spent two amazing weeks at Sara and Mauro’s place in Bormida. On the day I arrived, Sara picked me up from the train station. Their home is located in rural Liguria, but still not too far from the beautiful and more touristy coast. It is incredibly charming! The working hours were flexible and really ok. My first week was a bit more intense since I arrived right at the peak of the harvest season: we drove to different fields, picked grapes for a few hours, and had lunch before pressing them at the cellar. The work is fun! Most of the time we were a group of three Wwoofers, which made the experience even better. Once the bulk of the harvest was done, the second week was much calmer. Sometimes you get special tasks and responsibilities: from day one, my duty was to take care of the ten chickens in the garden, like feeding them, giving them water, and opening and closing the coop. If you have other talents, you can easily take on different responsibilities, and Sara and Mauro will be grateful. Besides work, I truly enjoyed spending time with the really lovely family (Sara, Mauro, their daughter and parents) as well as hanging out with my fellow Wwoofers, going to the beach, or doing relaxing hiking trails in the mountains. What else is there to say? The food was amazing, I was able to improve my Italian. We all became friends, and it was hard to leave. The only downside: the chickens didn’t lay a single egg during my stay. I will have to come back!

Sara and Mauro, and their beautiful terraced vineyard in the forest, made this an unforgettable wwoofing experience. From the start they were friendly and kind, clear in their expectations, a lot of fun to be around, and generous in ensuring that we had a good time. Very queer affirming and friendly. I was wwoofing for 2.5 weeks, and have woofed at around a dozen places before. The other woofer who was with us was there for her first time. Both us had a wonderful time and would like to return. Sara and Mauro made sure that we had work that matched our skills and abilities, and that was safe for us to do. We worked hard, but Sara and Mauro always worked harder and longer, and we really felt we could make a difference to their busy summer harvest. We had private bedrooms in their home and enjoyed many hikes through the chestnut forests around their home. The river at the bottom of their garden has a clear pool for swimming. Mauro also took me foraging for my first porcini! We ate delicious lunches and dinners together with the three grandparents, one kid, and wwoofers each day. Sara and Mauro were generous to translate and make sure I was included in conversation. Their cellar and vineyards are a 15-40min drive from their home, so we did spend a reasonable amount of time in the car, but it was worth it for how beautiful the vineyards are. The work was varied and their wines are beautiful. It’s a great environment to learn about natural/low intervention wines.

I was searching for the perfect place to learn about natural winemaking, and I found so much more. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I loved every minute spent with Sara and Mauro. I'm so glad they let me stay in their home—even without speaking Italian, they made me feel like family from day one. I'm leaving with a much better understanding of natural winemaking and so many great memories. Thank you for your warmth, your generosity, and for making my stay so special. Grazie mille! 🩷

I feel so lucky that I was able to spend time with Sara, Mauro and their beautiful friends and family during my Wwoofing stay! They are both extremely inclusive and generous. I’m leaving this experience with two new friends! The work itself during my 5 week stay was vaired - time spent on their 7 vineyard plots (leaf plucking, shoot cleaning, tidying the vines, cutting the grass etc), helping prepare and conduct organic treatment, time in the cellar labelling and also helping deliver. Most days were different which kept the work interesting! Sara and Mauro are great at checking in and making sure the work is okay for you, encouraging breaks as you need. They both have a very strong work ethic but also know how to take a break and relax. I spent my free time either by the house (there’s beautiful walking trails and a river nearby - also went foraging for mushrooms with Mauro) or taking short trips to the surrounding areas of Liguria. Sara and Mauro were generous with offering to drive me to the closest train station so I could explore (s. Giuseppe d Cairo). We ate SO well everyday and had amazing wine with dinner too. Food was always plentiful and varied, plus I was able to cook and share a few of my favourite recupies as well. Overall an amazing experience. Anyone who gets the chance to learn from and work with Sara and Mauro should consider themselves lucky. A 100% authentic experience!

I had an epic experience with Sara, Mauro, Mati, Luigi, Ginger and Paolo, as soon as I arrived I immediately felt like part of the family. The big house is nestled right in a beautiful and peaceful part of the forest where we collected some wood and foraged mushrooms. We worked in their beautiful vineyards and cellar, conducting different post harvest jobs, where Mauro and Sara would patiently explain each task, there are also awesome opportunities to explore the mountains and coast on days off. The passion and knowledge that Mauro and Sara have for natural wine was obvious and they were amazing teachers about the winemaking process from vine to bottle. We ate well, drank well and laughed lots, it was an unforgettable experience!
