Viviamo nelle campagne tra Carlentini e il mare, in una azienda agricola biologica con velleità agroecologiche e permaculturali. La zona è a forte vocazione agrumicola, ma terribilmente danneggiata dalla tristezza, un virus degli agrumi. Per questo i terreni sono stati recentemente reimpiantati con Avocados, Banani, Manghi e numerose varietà di Agrumi. Mentre cerco di far crescere gli alberelli, i terreni vengono gestiti in biologico e con l'ulteriore attenzione ad una minima e spesso nulla lavorazione del suolo. La mia compagna Vittoria non parla bene l'inglese ma sa farsi capire in ogni situazione. Viviamo con cani, gatti, galline e bambini, due di 4 e 2 anni.
Il terreno è diviso in due parti, in ognuna c'è una casa. Accogliamo nella casetta dove vivevamo qualche anno fa prima di ristrutturare la nostra. Ci sono due stanze matrimoniali, entrambe a disposizione dei woofer, un bagno, la cucina e le dispense piene. Si trova sulla stessa strada ad un paio di km dalla casa dove viviamo ora. Si pranza sempre insieme a casa nostra mentre la cena è in autogestione nella casetta, visto che dobbiamo poter sempre assecondare i bisogni serali dei nostri bambini. Quindi ci si aspetta una certa autonomia dai Woofer, soprattutto nel cucinare la sera e tenere in condizioni dignitose la casetta.
A 3 km a piedi si può raggiungere la fermata del bus ed essere connessi con Catania e Augusta. Organizzandosi per tempo, è possibile anche prendere il treno a Lentini.
Anche se ben collegato viviamo in un luogo un po' sperduto con poche case abitate vicino. I vicini più prossimi sono una simpatica coppia di allevatori in pensione ed in generale non ci sono mai stati problemi, neppure furti. Se non siete abituati a questa tranquillità e silenzio sappiate che può fare impressione trovarsi la sera in una casa sperduta. Ma con il tempo ci si abitua.
Gestisco i terreni da coltivatore diretto, quindi personalmente con un aiuto di un dipendente part time. Chi viene a trovarmi a volte mi aiuta qualche ora la mattina o il pomeriggio, magari per preparare il lavoro delle giornate seguenti, a volte in campo o a volte a casa, quando opportuno.
La primavera è un momento di risveglio di tante cose tutte insieme. Le attività riguardano la pulizia primaverile dei terreni, le potature degli ulivi, l'annuale manutenzione e ripristino dell'impianto di irrigazione, la preparazione dell'orto o degli orti. Quest'anno in particolare ci sarà inoltre da sostituire qualche albero che non è sopravvissuto al suo primo anno, e pianteremo macchia mediterranea in tutti i margini delle colture arboree.
L'estate è tosta, quindi per evitare di farsi del male si lavora o molto presto o molto tardi. Questo è un periodo di cura e osservazione, inoltre si presidia il territorio per prevenire e segnalare gli incendi.
In autunno si va chiudendo la gestione degli impianti degli arboreti che si preparano alla ninna e si aprono mille altri cantieri, tra cui la raccolta delle olive, le semine, i nuovi orti, e le varie ed eventuali feste.
A queste attività stagionali si aggiungono dei piccoli cantieri che possono sorgere con le energie e le competenze di chi viene a trovarci.
Il territorio in cui ci troviamo è magnifico: siamo a pochi chilometri dal mare e geologicamente ci troviamo all'inizio degli Iblei. In tempi antichissimi una fuoriuscita di magma pre-etneo ha interessato il territorio quindi pietra vulcanica e calcare si mischiano in maniere affascinanti. Grotte e necropoli sono comuni nel territorio, non a caso siamo vicino alla necropoli di Sortino.

We live in the countryside between Carlentini and the sea, on an organic farm with agroecological and permaculture aspirations. The area has a strong citrus-growing tradition, but it has been severely affected by tristeza, a virus that attacks citrus trees. For this reason, the land has recently been replanted with avocados, bananas, mangoes, and many varieties of citrus. While I focus on helping the young trees grow, the land is managed organically, with additional care given to minimal—and often no—soil tillage.
My partner Vittoria does not speak English very well, but she knows how to make herself understood in any situation. We live with dogs, cats, chickens, and children—two of them, aged 4 and 2.
The land is divided into two parts, each with a house. We host people in the small house where we used to live a few years ago, before renovating our current home. There are two double bedrooms, both available to WWOOFers, a bathroom, a kitchen, and well-stocked pantries. The guest house is on the same road, a couple of kilometers from the house where we live now. Lunch is always shared together at our home, while dinner is self-managed in the guest house, as we need to be able to meet our children’s evening needs. For this reason, a certain level of independence is expected from WWOOFers, especially when it comes to cooking dinner and keeping the guest house in decent condition.
A 3 km walk will take you to the bus stop, with connections to Catania and Augusta. With some advance planning, it is also possible to take the train from Lentini.
Even though the area is well connected, we live in a somewhat remote place, with only a few inhabited houses nearby. Our closest neighbors are a friendly retired couple who raise livestock, and in general there have never been any problems—not even theft. If you are not used to this level of peace and quiet, it may feel strange to find yourself in an isolated house in the evening. Over time, however, you get used to it.
I manage the land as a hands-on farmer, working personally with the help of a part-time employee. Visitors sometimes help me for a few hours in the morning or in the afternoon, perhaps preparing work for the following days—sometimes in the fields and sometimes around the house, when appropriate.
Spring is a time when many things awaken all at once. Activities include spring cleaning of the land, olive tree pruning, the annual maintenance and restoration of the irrigation system, and preparing the vegetable garden or gardens. This year in particular, we will also replace some trees that did not survive their first year, and we will plant Mediterranean scrub along all the edges of the orchards.
Summer is tough, so to avoid injury or exhaustion we work either very early in the morning or very late in the day. This is a period of care and observation, and we also monitor the land to prevent and report fires.
In autumn, we gradually wind down the management of the orchards as they prepare for dormancy, while opening up many other projects, including olive harvesting, sowing, new gardens, and various celebrations.
In addition to these seasonal activities, small projects may arise depending on the energy and skills of those who come to stay with us.
The territory where we are located is magnificent: we are just a few kilometers from the sea and, geologically, at the beginning of the Iblei Mountains. In very ancient times, a pre-Etna magma outflow affected this area, so volcanic stone and limestone mix in fascinating ways. Caves and necropolises are common in the area—no coincidence, as we are close to the Sortino necropolis.

We had a super nice stay at the house of Giacomo and his family. We stayed for almost 2 weeks. Every day there was either lunch or dinner with them, depending on the work we did - Vitoria is a great cook! For the other meals we got a lot of local food from Giacomo produced by neighbors or themselves.
We stayed in our own house as stated in the farms description. For us it was perfect because we are a small family and we had our own privacy. Also we had a car to get around.
Very sympathetic and helpful people! We can recommend!
