Bari

We are at the farm of the permaculturist agronomist Ignazio Schettini located on the outskirts of the city of Bari. The farm can be reached by urban transport from the central station in just 35 minutes by bus or 15 minutes by train. The 3-hectare area currently has a focus on commercial gardens and vegetable gardens for rent for members of the social promotion association ''Laboratorio di Permacultura Mediterranea”, known as MEDIPERlab, which manages part of the farm's land on loan for free use. There is a mixed orchard, an olive grove and free-range poultry. There are also refuge areas for wild animals, areas for reforestation with tree species of Mediterranean scrub, 9 beehives for the management of pollination in the orchard, the breeding of earthworms in bathtubs and an area for the composting of organic matter and animal manure. The WWOOFer will have the opportunity to follow all the farm's operations, including direct sales activities and the organisation of courses aimed at environmental education and permaculture, having the possibility to stay by camping in tents (bring your own), caravans or paying for he apartment available in the historical centre of Loseto, a Medieval town 1.5 km far away from the farm and directly connected by a track that can be covered on foot (12 min) or by bicycle (4 min).

Bari
Bari Loseto is a train station where you can get in 15 min by taking a train from Bari Central Station. Very handy. From there you are ten minutes walking from Ta’ Rossa.

I set out to learn what it was like to build an urban permaculture farm, but what I found instead was a magical week of living and working in a beautiful, abundant food forest alongside the most delightful team — Ignazio and his father, Nicola.
Their warmth makes you feel right at home. Ignazio is deeply kind and patient, always answering my many questions, and so much fun to be around. He checked in often to make sure I enjoyed the work, and I always felt trusted and supported. The meals were healthy and delicious, the tasks simple yet varied, and the caravan cozy and comfortable.
I loved watching Ignazio’s mind at work — his curiosity and openness make Ta' Rossa a place where everyone can experiment and learn. I hate to admit it, but he was right. One week isn’t enough! I know I’ll have to come back.
Special shoutout to Rovo and Lupa, the cutest companions anyone could ask for.

I had the absolute pleasure to stay with Ignazio at Ta Rossa for 10 days in September. It was my first WWOOF experience and I think I have really been spoilt by my luck! Ignazio is a beautiful human inside and out. From the first day he made me feel right at home, until the last day where I truly felt like it was my second home and it was difficult to leave. During my stay Ignazio made sure to invite me to different events and to see some parts of Puglia which was super fun. The farm is beautiful and peaceful, I loved harvesting straight from the garden and cooking up in the big kitchen. I worked a bit with his father in the mornings, which was kind of funny with the language barrier! Ignazio’s passion for permaculture is contagious and although I had never been specifically interested in it, my time with Iggy and Ta Rossa made me excited to think of what ideas I could bring back home with me.
Ignazio, your joie de vivre is truly unmatched. Thank you so much for your generosity, your warm and funny attitude, and all the laughs over the past 10 days. You made my stay an unforgettable one and I already can’t wait to come back and make eggplant chips!
I could not recommend more to do WWOOFing with Ignazio. If you enjoy good humour, permaculture and adventure, I am certain you will have the time of your life!

Ta'Rossa is a truly special place, but what makes it even more so are the people who run it and its delightful four-legged residents: Lupa, Rovo, Crick, and Crock. I had the most wonderful time learning about the farm's structure, which is based on the principles of permaculture. The dedication that Ignazio and Nicola have to their vision is nothing short of inspirational.
Located in Loseto, the farm made it super easy to visit nearby gems like Bari, Monopoli, and Polignano a Mare. I got to exercise my italian and learn more about Puglia.
P.S. Ignazio is a bit of a clean freak, so be sure to bring your most organized self to Ta'Rossa! All jokes aside, don't overthink it—book your stay. You'll thank me later, because this will go down as one of the most memorable times in Italy!

I spent 3 weeks at Ta’ Rossa in September 2024.
I loved every minute and would definitely recommend WWOOFing here.
Why?
Firstly, the team (la squadra) - Ignazio, the owner, is a great guy, very easy to get on with and, I have no doubt, is and will remain a friend for life. Giulio, who works at Ta’ Rossa, is also very easy to get on with, knows so much about planting, and cooks great food. Nicola, Ignazio’s father, aged 80, is a force of nature, as well as being a lovely guy - if you can keep up with him at work, well done - I couldn’t! Amin, from Bangladesh, is actually a chef - he gave me some of the best food I’ve had with hits of chilli and coriander.
Secondly, the animals (gli animali) - I’m in Italy for 2 months and miss my dog (as well as Daiana obviously 😂) so immediately adopted Rovo and Lupa as my new best friends. As well as the chickens who are lovely when you go feed them - even the f***er who somehow keeps escaping 🙄.
Thirdly, the farm (la fattoria) - a beautiful place with an interesting variety of vegetables and fruit. Amazing what Ignazio and his team has done with the place.
Fourthly, location (posizione) - 15 minutes walk to the train station (Bari Loseto) and you’re into Bari Centrali in 15 mins (cost - just over 1 euro) - have an afternoon / evening in Bari - or travel on, as I did, to places like Polignano a Mare and Trani.

My friend and I were at Ta’Rossa for 10 days and we had an amazing time. Ignazio is an amazing host. A warm, funny and kind person. And his dogs, Lupa and Rovo, are lovely! We’ve also met many wonderful people that would visit Ignazio.
The caravan was really comfortable, though really hot since we went in the hottest season of summer.
For the work, we had different tasks that would vary depending on what Ignazio needed to be done. We worked a lot in the garden, learned many things about permaculture life and we cooked. Overall, the work was really pleasant!
Ta’Rossa is really well located, near a train station that would allow us to get to Bari very easily. We’ve enjoyed the Amalfi beaches a lot!
We recommend this farm! Thank you Ignazio!
