Hello, we are Elisa and Roberto; we live with Giò, Amira, Libero (the dogs), Oliviero, Cesarino, La Nice, La Nilde, SiaMargara (the cats), Iovanna, Ida, Irina, Indira (the hens). The chickens revolutionized our life: POTERE AL POLLAIO (POWER TO THE HEN) we used to say, and so, a little over a year ago we moved to this big house to settle in a countryside capable of welcoming us and offering us a slower and truer future, connected to the rhythms that nature suggests. There was no vegetable garden, no fruit plants: wonderfully all to be designed and planned. So, following the principles of permaculture, we studied the actual conditions of this arrangement: we began by nurturing the soil, so as to form a simple small vegetable garden, for our needs; we transplanted a few fruit trees (a pear tree, a loquat tree, a plum tree, a cherry tree, a peach tree, an apple tree, a fig tree) and built a spiral of herbs. We prepared a daytime area and a nighttime area for the hens to give them the necessary space and adequate protection. We have set up a room on the ground floor to house friends and are planning to create another one in the attic. We are in contact with Antispecist associations and the network of RETE DEI SANTUARI PER ANIMALI LIBERI (Free Animal Sanctuaries) in Italy and are trying to find our location: hospitality will be extended to multispecies. Working in social work, in contact with people and animals, we like to think that the Podere al Pollaio can become a place of welcome for human and nonhuman animals, but we are only at the beginning of this new journey. The great thing about the Farm is that there is always something interesting to do! Open the chickens, clean the chicken coop, mow the lawn, check the plants, water the vegetable garden, scout out wild herbs, turn the compost bin, feed the beasts, take the dogs for a walk, prune the plants, set up artistic forays on the Podere, take care the tomatoes, make supports for the vines, fertilize, look for manure from the neighbors, mulch mulch mulch (!!). But then fortunately there are also the moments of peace and quiet, where you can read, sleep, walk (there are plenty of intriguing places here!!) and relax. You can even play table soccer!!! I couldn't give precise indications about the average day because every day can be different: climate, weather, energy are variables that cannot always be predicted. Guest space can be reserved, but we like to share meal times and be together, although it is not mandatory, of course. The guest studio is equipped with everything, so there is the necessities to be self-sufficient. There is also the possibility of pitching tents or hosting a camping car. Robi likes to play music, Elisa likes to draw, Gio likes to go for walks, Amira likes to search, the chickens like to rasp and watch us: the cats ... who knows ... those are special. There is a lot of hiking in these areas: there are mountains, forests, rivers and streams. On bright and particularly clear days the views here are truly remarkable. There is the Serra Morenica with miles of trails, there are the lakes near Ivrea, the ballerina lands, the Bessa nature reserve, there are the Elvo, Oropa and Cervo, the main streams of the Biellese, but close to home there is also the Gré, with small pools, for regenerating baths on summer days.

Our WWOOFing stay at Podere al Pollaio was a truly enriching experience. It was our first time WWOOFing, and we couldn’t have imagined a better place to start. Surrounded by peaceful nature, Podere al Pollaio has a calm and welcoming atmosphere that made us feel grounded right from the beginning. Roberto and Elisa are wonderful hosts – warm, open, and generous. From day one, they made us feel not just welcome, but truly part of the daily rhythm of life there. Their home is shared with a lively bunch of animals, each with their own charm and personality. A special highlight was getting to know Libero, their newest rescue dog. He had spent most of his life on a chain, so it was incredibly moving to see him enjoying his newfound freedom in such a loving environment. The evenings were great – long dinners with delicious food, good conversations, lots of laughter, and great music :) We also had the chance to meet some of their friends and neighbors, explore the nearby towns of Netro and Ivrea, and go hiking in the beautiful surrounding mountains. Whether you're new to WWOOFing or experienced, Podere al Pollaio is a place that offers more than just an exchange – it offers connection, learning, and a reminder of what really matters. We left feeling grateful, inspired, and already looking forward to returning.

Eliza and Roberto are amazing! I had an incredible time volunteering on their property, sharing great meals, laughing, working outside, and exploring their area. They are such kind and thoughtful people who always asked what I wanted/was interested in, whether it was the volunteering work each day or fun post-work activities. Because they are somewhat new to their property and have such big dreams for what it can become, there are so many things to do for work and fun. From working in the garden to doing repairs in the hen/chicken coop (“Pollaio”), and between exploring the nearby towns of Netro, Biella, & Ivrea to hiking the beautiful mountains visible from the house, there are so many amazing things to do and memories to be made. We had great dinners with some of their friends and family throughout my time there, and between those meals and Eliza & Robi’s warmth and joyfulness, they made me feel right at home from the start. The accommodations were great, as was the food, and I loved sharing the space with their dogs, cats, and hens. I’m fortunate and honored to be the first WWOOFer that they’ve hosted and I’m jealous of whoever is lucky enough to join them in the future. Thank you again Eliza and Robi for a fantastic experience and looking forward to the returning someday in the [hopefully near] future!
