------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, my name is Nadia (1975). I live with my husband Massimo (1967) and our two children, Emma (2006) e Elia (2007), in the Friulian lowlands, in a house surrounded by 10 hectares of certified organic farmland. We have two cats, Tina and Leo. We don’t keep any other animals, but pheasants and hares often wander around the fields. My project began 12 years ago, when we moved from the city to the countryside. I took over some land that had belonged to my grandfather and, starting from almost a blank slate, planted a large peach orchard, other fruit trees, a big vegetable garden, and an area dedicated to ancient grains. These grains are later transformed outside the farm into flours and baked products. Our aim was to create a richer and more biodiverse environment, so we also designed and planted a small woodland, two artificial ponds, and countryside hedges. Our little world is still growing, and every year it becomes more beautiful. I work with a few collaborators, because there is a lot to do, especially in summer. Almost every day we harvest vegetables and fruit — especially many delicious peaches! — but there are also many other tasks: removing weeds, preparing beds for sowing, transplanting vegetables by hand or with machinery, washing and packing products for sale. We sell our produce at local markets, directly at home, in town squares, and through our e-commerce. I would love to show you the different steps involved in running a small but complex farm, based on several agricultural activities where manual work is always important. On a typical day, you might spend the morning picking fruit and vegetables, washing them and packing them into crates. You might help clean the vegetable beds, take care of young plants during the delicate transplanting phase, or, if you are lucky, see the grain harvest and help us store the cereals. Putting your feet into a cart full of wheat is a wonderful feeling! We have a large liveable tent, with both a sleeping area and a living area, set in the shade of the trees near the house. The bathroom is on the ground floor of the house, very close to the tent. There is also, if needed, a spare room with a single bed in the sleeping area of the house, although it offers a little less privacy. In our family we all love cooking. We cook every day and we really enjoy sharing meals, especially in the evening, when the day’s work is finished and we can relax together around the table. We like experimenting with food, from vegan and vegetarian dishes to meat and fish, from traditional recipes to ethnic cuisine. Massimo relaxes by cycling towards the sea or the nearby hills. I prefer reading a good book or drawing, although I never have as much time as I would like. When possible, we enjoy going to the seaside at weekends. At home there is also a swimming pool where you can swim and cool down in your free time. We are close to Trieste and to the seaside town of Grado, where I also take part in local markets. This is a flat area, ideal for exploring by bicycle, with natural parks near the mouth of the Isonzo River and the ancient Roman city of Aquileia nearby.
